Renting A House, Apartment or Condo In Toronto? Beware Of This Scam

According to a recent CBC article, a real estate scam that involves online listings is growing in popularity and there are reports of it happening in the GTA.

In this scam, prospective renters inquire about listings that aren’t real, or are even contacted by the scammers themselves, posing as homeowners in need of a renter.

The “landlord” will ask for a deposit via wire transfer, but as it turns out, the property either doesn’t exist or the person doesn’t even own it. In fact, many people who have been selling their homes online have found their photos, listing details and addresses hijacked by scammers, who post the ads elsewhere as their own.
