Renovations are not a small – or cheap – undertaking. Without the proper preparation, they can end up a huge headache. But they don’t have to be! Plan in advance so that you’re not met with unpleasant surprises during the course of your renovations.
Will you have to stay out of the house?
While it seems like a pretty big inconvenience to pack up and move out of your house for the duration of a renovation, it might actually be easier on you and your family in the long run – especially if the renovation takes over your kitchen or bathroom for more than just a few days.
Are permits required?
Permits are a big deal. If you don’t have the proper permits for a job, you may have to undo the work you’ve had done or pay extra to bring the renovation up to code.
Is your budget flexible?
Sometimes, going over budget during a renovation is unavoidable. Make sure you have a bit of wiggle room when it comes to both your budget and your allotted timeframe for the work.
Is your contractor reputable?
Making sure your contractor is reputable is worth it because it saves you the worst headache of all. Don’t just ask for references – call them. Doing your homework is a very small investment when you consider the real investment you’ll be leaving in their hands.
