Are you going on vacation this summer? As a homeowner, it can be hard to really relax when you’re not one hundred percent sure what’s going on back at the house. Achieve total peace of mind by taking a few steps before you go away so you can finally let go and enjoy yourself.
Lock your doors: Of course, this one is pretty obvious. But not everyone remembers to lock their windows or their garage door, for example, before leaving the house. Ensure everything that can lock is locked and that your locks are in good repair before leaving on vacation.
Look like you’re home: Hire or ask someone to pick up your mail or newspaper while you’re away. It can also be a great idea to pick up an inexpensive timer at a home hardware store and set a few of your lights on timers to avoid having your house look as though it’s unoccupied for the duration of your vacation.
Be friendly: It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but being friendly with your neighbours can be the best way to keep your home safe while you’re away. And to be honest, the nosier, the better. They’ll be the first to ask questions if someone’s around your home who shouldn’t be, and if you’re on good terms they can give you a call and get the go ahead to call the police if you weren’t expecting someone.
