Ontario Is Considering E-Signatures For Real Estate Sales

The Ontario government is looking to make real estate transactions more convenient by examining whether they can implement electronic signatures, allowing for home buyers and sellers to sign their important real estate documents via emails or text.

As anyone who has bought, sold, or is planning on buying or selling a home in Ontario knows, there’s quite a bit of paperwork involved. However, people have jobs and busy lives, not to mention the fact that many buyers could be out of the city, province or country when completing a deal.

Attourney General Madeleine Meilleur told the Toronto Star last month that, “It’s often the most important transaction that people are doing, but a lot of times they’re busy at work or don’t live in the same city. So we want them to be able to sign a mortgage or a deed for the sale of a house or the buying of a house and make it easier for them. Of course the concern is how can we prevent fraud? So we’re consulting the public about it.”

Ontario residents can email magpolicy@ontario.ca their opinions until December 31.
